The life and times of Alistair Kerr
Today we had all the mums and dads (and sprogs) from the NCT class round for a reunion, now that we all have our babies. Lots of sharing stories about the various trials and tribulations of being a new parent - so its good to know we’re not the only ones who aren’t getting any sleep!
All the babies were very well behaved, and mostly slept - which all the parents agreed meant that their babes would probably cry all evening.
Happy Birthday Ally! He celebrated his one month birthday today - and was totally unfazed by the momentous occasion. Mum and Dad however can’t believe its only been one month (but in a good way). Unfortunately for Ally the weather was terrible so the highlight of his day was a trip to buy crickets. Don’t worry Alistair this is not a reflection on future birthdays when we promise to make more of an effort to ensure a superb day!
Time for Alistair’s weekly visit to his Bumps and Babes class. As usual he decided to take the opportunity to catch up on some sleep as he’d decided to have a late night. He did manage to wake for a feed and nappy change but that was it. Mum got to meet two more beautiful babies whose parents attended the same antenatal class. Great to see their parents too though strange to see all us Mums sans bumps!
Another trip to Hillsborough for a walk and a chance for Mum to chat to other Mums. Alistair is weighed again and is now 11 pounds! Then home for lunch and a chance for Alistair to use his new gym. Not as tiring as it sounds it’s a play gym and basically involves him lying on his back and staring at the mirror. I understand this narcissism is perfectly normal and just a phase. Luckily for him he does have a beautiful face which is well worth staring at.
Well today we had visits from Grandma and Auntie Katy. Alistair tried his usual tricks during a nappy change with Auntie Katy but she cleverly avoided any mess. A trip round the village in his pram out in the sunshine resulted in one sleepy baby. Next it was off to the doctors - worry not he’s fine just needed to get him registered. Right now he’s wide awake and for the moment sucking on his dummy and appearing very content. Don’t be fooled Dad’s out so it’s almost certain we’ll have melt down shortly.
Ok, ok - not because he’s a child genius, just because mum works there! Dad took the day off and the Kerr family all went to ‘bumps n babes’ where we met baby Thomas (whos mum and dad we know from NCT classes), though Alistair slept thorough most of it. Then off to school where mum is a Biology teacher, to show off baby to everyone and anyone we met! Alistair slept through this too. Next of to Meadowhell for some shopping - again, he slept through this. It now becomes clear to dad why he spends every night awake until 3am with baby!
Well today has been very busy and it’s still only 2pm! First a visit to Hillsborough Park and a wander round with the warden and a few other Mums and babies followed by a cuppa in the pavillion. Then a trip to the Junior library which hosts a breastfeeding group so chance for Alistair to have his mid-morning meal, a nappy change and weigh in with the health visitor. He’s now 10 pounds 3 so we’re obviously doing something right. Finally a bit of shopping which Alistair was not so impressed with and made sure everyone knew how he felt. Now back home and having a post-lunch snooze on Mum.
A visit to Geordie land was the adventure this weekend for Alistair - Auntie Katy’s birthday (21st I think) party, and though he was only one of many babies there, we have to say none were quite as
cute as Alistair. He seemed to thoroughly enjoy the day out, and the obligatory game of pass the baby. He gave Auntie Hannah a chance (well a few chances) to change her first ever nappy! I’m sure she’ll be happy to know she’ll have plenty of chances to perfect her technique!
Alistair has decided he is on the night shift these days, which is fun! Today at work I was presented with a load of gifts for baby, which Im sure Alistair will enjoy - sent an e-mail out to thank everyone who contributed to the card and gift, including the line ‘and though it feels like I’m going for some kind of sleep deprivation record at the moment, all the kind words and assurances that it will get better also help‘ - only to receive 37 replies with 10 minutes telling me whoever told me it will get better is a liar. Oh joy.The picture on the right is to remind me he does actually sleep sometimes.
Well the midwife has been and gone and Alistair is now officially discharged. He weighed in at 9 lbs 6 so despite the puking episodes is clearly getting plenty to eat - Mum’s nips are testament to that (thank goodness for Lansinoh)!
Dad’s first day back at work but so far we’re coping. Alistair is asleep in his carry cot and the dogs snoring away on the sofa - Mum is hoping to join them later! Poor Dad was kept awake till 3am by a certain little man so I hope he’s managing at work ok.
